Having a kinesiology degree I have a strong desire towards physical activity as well as being involved and participating in many sports. I have had experience either playing or coaching any type of sport you can think of. I believe a student should have plenty of opportunities during their education to be physically active. Whether the student comes to the gymnasium in the morning, at noon hour or after school wanting to be physically active, that opportunity should be there for them to take out some sort of equipment and be active. I take pride in being well organized so activities and lessons run smoothly. I have had a passion for teaching since my early high school years. I also enjoy being around kids big and small. I am friendly and make myself easily approachable. It makes my day when I can put a smile on a kids' face.
I ensure my students that I want them to do well. I believe that any student can succeed and if I have not given a full effort in trying to make each individual successful then I have not fulfilled my duty as a teacher. A teacher should also be able to modify and accommodate lessons for each individual in the classroom. I have shown an example of this in my sample lesson plan where I have made modifications for each individual skill either to make the skill easier or more challenging depending on the skill level of the student. I also believe that every student should be treated fairly rather than equally. A lot of people use the word equal and equity interchangeably, however the two words have very different meanings. It is virtually impossible to treat every student equally. Each individual student will require different needs. For example, some students will struggle more with geometry in math than others. Therefore as a teacher, we must devote more of our time to the students who are struggling in geometry rather than the ones who are excelling. This is not to say that we ignore the students who excel in a particular area, but we will focus our time less on the students who do not need the help. However, we still must see if they have any questions we could answer and let them know that we appreciate their great work.
I also am a big believer in parent involvement. Research has shown that parent involvement is the most important part in a students' academic achievement. It is essential for us as teachers to collaborate with parents for the benefit of our students. It is not fair if we update our students' parents once a semester during parent teacher interviews. There needs to be more frequent feedback for the parents. Learning does not stop once school ends, it needs to continue after and beyond school is finished. My main goal as a teacher is to enable students to become lifelong learners as I have learnt many of times that learning does not stop after grade 12.
